A Journey for Cultural Exchange to Aotearoa New Zealand
February 17th - March 4th, 2008

Ojasvin Kingi Davis

Ojasvin Kingi Davis is Maori from Aotearoa, New Zealand. His bloodline and family tradition stretch back through Ngai Tupoto, Ngathihine, Ngapuhi to Waitaha, the older people of his Islands. With this responsibility the attentions and guidance from his elders, his family and his inspirational grandmother Mere Tewake Tana he has been imbued with culture, custom and disciplinary practices. His spiritual wealth of great value has increased and grown by co-working with his teacher Shin Shiva Svayambhu Mahadeva. The practices hold great relevance to the world we live in, and hold a particular possibility for the transformation of young people.

In his early years he was fortunate to experience the contemporary combined teaching of the highly regarded Hato Petera College, a Maori Catholic Boys School. Within this educational environment he learnt a love of sport, song, art and dance/kapa haka and 'Tikanga Maori', evocative of the old teachings, and the worth and importance of the arts in the holistic development of young people.

This awareness and call to develop and explore his culture has grown incrementally and in the drive to express creativity, Ojasvin has formed various creative partnerships with family and friends. In 1994 he co-founded the fashion label MARAMA with Marama Tracey Lloyd. His original Maori designs are hand printed onto garments, and sold successfully in New Zealand. In the design process Ojasvin, embracing the new technologies available, began training as a graphic artist with the Maori off-line production company ORA-DIGITAL directed by Merata Mita. This afforded many opportunities to work and create in the digital format whilst allowing him to take independent commissions for designs and art work from such diverse clients as NZ Asthma Foundation, Auckland Sisters of Mercy, Auckland Hospital Board, amongst others.

With his family Ojasvin joined Kapa Haka group" TE AO HURIHANGA" and performed at the Auckland regional finals, this lead to taking first place in the Taitokerau Kapa Haka competitions. Continuing with the call to perform Ojasvin formed and worked with "MARAMA MUSIC " a fusion of instruments and percussion creating original contemporary maori music in collaboration with family members. The group recorded shows for New Zealand National radio and performed at venues throughout New Zealand. As a result of this " MARAMA MUSIC " were invited to perform in Europe at the Earth Celebration in Konolfingen, Switzerland, an annual festival bringing together many cultures, religions and traditions through song, dance and music.

It was at this festival that Ojasvin met his teacher and began a process that would take him from New Zealand in service to his tradition, his family of promoting dynamic harmony and world peace. It was at this festival where Grandmothers healing Haka He Uri Marama Toa was born co-written by his grandmother Mere Tewake Tana.

Since 1999 Ojasvin has been in an intense co-working and worldwide training process with his teacher Shin Shiva Svayambhu Mahadeva . He is an appointed teacher of the worldwide movement. MIN.I.L.I.T , the yoga of integral learning school. Through his dance and movement with 'Grandmothers Healing Haka' he creates a safe and nurturing environment to initiate and transmit the teachings of MIN.ILIT. Ojasvin permeates his Haka with these teachings in his desire and hope to assist each individual to experience the way behind the ways.

In this process and in order to reach many people Ojasvin has taken the opportunitiy of performing on television and stage. Ojasvin has taken the Haka onto Roma with Raj 3 Television in Italy on a number of occasions and has even trained an Italian rugby team to accompany him with the famous Haka "Ka mate ka mate ka ora ka ora" live.

In recent years he has become involved in co-creating with the one world orchestra in Europe L'Ensemble Musical Du Monde. With musicians and singers from France, Germany, Georgia Switzerland, and Mexico. The L'Ensemble Musical Du Monde promotes dynamic harmony using initiatic sounds and natural rythymns that emanate wellness.

His work continues based in Switzerland and New Zealand, together with his partner Iris Hausermann he is developing the successful and innovative worldwide seminar program "Grandmothers Healing Haka - He Uri Marama Toa".
